The latest predictions by the Swedish Public Employment Service say that more than half a million people in Sweden will be unemployed next year. This means that quarter of a million employed today could be losing their jobs.

According to the prognosis unemployment will increase from 6.1 % in 2008 to 11 % in 2010. All groups will be affected but it is believed that it will strike hardest against young people and those not established on the labour market.

Tord Strannefors at the Employment Service, said to Swedsih news agency TT that the situation is difficult all over the globe and that one would have to look at the economic situation around World War II in order to find similar conditions. (rm)
