The Norwegians Are Coming!

Published tisdag 7 april 2009 kl 16.24

To celebrate Maundy/Holy Thursday – “Skärtorsdag” in Swedish- on the Swedish side of the border has become a tradition for thousands of Norwegians. The majority are teens and young adults.

In Strömstad, on the west coast of Sweden, local police are preparing for this Thursday’s annual influx of drunk Norwegian revellers.

The local police have decided to boost up their ranks and about 30 police officers will be posted around town. As an extra precaution traffic in the central parts of the city centre will be closed off.

According to the local police it is not only on Thursday that Norwegians are expected over the border- most have their Easter Holidays this week and many take the opportunity to come to Strömstad and do some shopping.

However, it is only on Thursday that the police are expecting to need reinforcemnets. It will be the local bars and restaurants that can count on extra takings on the day, though. The state owned alcohol chain Systembolaget – Swedes only place to purchase alcohol - will be closed on the day. (rm)
