Protest Against Playground Apartments

As a last attempt to stop apartment houses being built in a school playground, parents have written to the United Nations children’s organization UNICEF. In the letter they say the planned construction of the two seven storey buildings violates the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

The parents say the apartment buildings would take away more than 40 percent of the playground next to the Engelbrekt school in central Stockholm.

The city of Stockholm says instead the children will be getting an underground sports facility, and the local councillor responsible says the lot in question has never been used as a playground. This is disputed by one of the parents, who tells the newspaper that children have played there for a century.

Another parent says the new underground facility won’t be an acceptable replacement as according to the schedule some children will only be allowed to play there one hour a week.
