HONOUR VIOLENCE

4,000 Youngsters Oppressed

Published tisdag 14 april 2009 kl 10.32
Living a free life?

Thousands of youngsters in the Stockholm region are exposed to so-called honour violence. A survey carried out by Stockholm University shows that some 4,000 teenagers in the capital have to constrict their lifestyles in order to meet their families’ stern expectations.

Every fourth girl in the region claims her parents expect her to still be virgin by the time she gets married. Every sixth girl does not even have a right to choose her husband. The survey also shows that many families try to enforce their convictions by using illegal methods.

In a comment, Ulf Kristersson, responsible for social issues at the Stockholm municipality, condemned the oppression of youngsters in the name of family honour. It is not acceptable that young people are deprived their right to live the life they want, Kristersson stated. (ah)
