WORLD CONFERENCE ON RACISM

Swedish Delegate Walks Out Of UN Conference

Swedish ambassador Hans Dahlgren walked out of the UN Conference on Racism Monday, in protest at the President of Iran’s speech, where Mahmoud Ahmadinejad called Israel ”a racist state”. Sweden had already decided not to send Foreign Minister Carl Bildt to the conference, over fears about what the conference might decide. In the final document of the first conference in 2001 in Durban, Zionism was equated with Apartheid. Ambassador Dahlgren walked out of the conference together with countless other Western diplomats in protest at the Iranian president’s speech. Dahlgren says that all the EU ambassadors had agreed to participate in the mass walkout if they felt the Ahmadinejad crossed the line on Israel. He returned to his seat, however, once the Iranian president had left the speaker’s podium.
