Dial S for Sweden
Want an easy to remember telephone number?
Starting from now companies and groups in Sweden will be able to buy a US-style alphanumeric phone number.
For example, news agency TT posits that a number such as 020-APOTEKET could be taken by the state pharmacies.
Popular in the USA for some time, alphanumerics or ’vanity numbers’ had not crossed over to Europe, due to a lack of standardised keypads on telephones. But now this basis exists and companies like Sweden’s Alfatell will start to sell personalised numbers, for a charge expected to be at least 870 US dollars per quarter.
Alphanumeric numbers are useful for companies and organisations, partly because they are easy to remember, linked to a logo or brand, or because they can be toll-free or local-call cost. (LC)
