Exile Communities Under Attack

Published tisdag 21 april 2009 kl 18.48

Spying is alive and well in Sweden - and the focus of operations is asylum seekers and refugees.

In its yearly report the Swedish Security Service, Säpo, reports that an unnamed foreign diplomat was expelled from Sweden after spying on refugees from his homeland who had come to Sweden.

Sweden is home to people fleeing from many war-torn regions. According to the security service there are several countries spying on exiles living in Sweden. About ten such cases have been uncovered since year 2000.

According to Säpo the expelled diplomat was, in fact, a security officer in his homeland. He made contact with exile groups and attempted to win influence over them through bribery and threats.
