Police Stopping Killers from Becoming Doctors

Published söndag 26 april 2009 kl 17.22
No more 'Dr. Death'..

Swedish police are allowing access to criminals’ records to make sure killers and rapists cannot obtain medical licenses. This was announced after a number of spectacular cases of abuse of regulations. Recently a convicted murderer had filed a legal complaint and a demand for damages after Uppsala University had rejected his application for a medical education. In another case a sex offender who had been committed to an asylum received a physician’s license, allowing him to practice.

Now the national police board decided to put a stop to this kind of abuse by opening criminal records to the health authorities who will thus be able to determine if applicants are ethically suited to become doctors.

The Swedish Medical Association welcomed the decision. But it demands that only crimes that are intolerable within the medical profession should be disclosed.   (KH)
