Swedish Coffin-Smasher on Trial

Published tisdag 26 maj 2009 kl 12.18

A headline-grabbing trial has begun in northern Sweden against a grave-digger filmed by Swedish television a year ago while smashing coffins with his machine before filling the grave with soil.

The idea was to avoid follow-up work filling the hole formed when the buried coffin finally collapsed.

The man is accused of unethical practices and violating the sanctity of the dead, but he argues that this is a common practice even elsewhere in Sweden, that his employers have instructed him to do this and yet he is the only one facing charges.

The accused admits that the practice is not defensible and that over the years, he has lost some of his ethical values when digging those graves.
