Forced Marriages to Become Illegal

Published tisdag 2 juni 2009 kl 13.23

70 000 young people, or five per cent of the Swedes between 16 and 25, do not feel that they freely can choose their husband or wife. That is according to a new report from the Swedish National Board of Youth Affairs.

In response to the report, the Minister for Integration and Gender Equality has said that she would like to make forced marriages a criminal offence. She would also like to abolish the rule of exemption that make it possible for some children to get married.
