Sweden is a step closer to becoming host nation for the European Spallation Source ESS. A spokeswoman for Research Minister Lars Leijonborg confirmed in Stockholm that Spain has given up plans to be the leader for the neutron research project.

On Wednesday a group of Spanish scientists has taken up talks with Swedish colleagues to discuss future cooperation in nuclear research.

The technical ESS facility to bombard metal objects with protons in order to set free neutrons for research purposes is to be built in in the university city of Lund in the south of Sweden.
