The burned-out fuel rods from Sweden’s three nuclear power plants will be deposited in the municipality of Östhammar northeast of Uppsala. This was announced by the country’s Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Board SKB on Wednesday.

Following this decision, different authorities for radiation monitoring and environment protection will define the conditions necessary to build the storing facility. SKB officials said they expect final analyses around 2014. Construction of the underground nuclear waste depot will take another five to seven years.
