EU election

Party Leaders Face the Results

No big EU boost for Prime Minister Reinfeldt, but his colleague Jan Björklund (seen on screen) had an excellent night

The Left Party and the June List were the main losers of Sunday's election.

'A big defeat' admitted Sören Wibe of the June List.

Lars Ohly, leader of the Left Party, says that his party failed to mobilise EU-critical voters, who stayed at home.

Little comfort for Sweden's two main parties either, as they failed to boost their vote above the level of the last EU election in 2004.

'We increased somewhat and kept our seats,' says Prime Minister Fredrick Reinfeldt, who also took comfort from the fact that his partners in government, the liberal Folkpartiet, gained a seat.

'It seems to be an election where people can be bolder, and test out new people and parties' says Social Democrat Marita Ulvskog. Meanwhile her party's leader, Mona Sahlin, was eager to remind people that just a few weeks earlier the Moderates had looked to replace the Socialists as Sweden's biggest party. She also says that this means a boost for the Social Democrats' campaign for next September's national elections.

The liberal Folkpartiet did well, and leader Jan Björklund says that this is a sign that the Swedish people have now accepted their place in the EU and so turn to his party, as the one with the clearest EU profile.

The xenophobic Sweden Democrats were pleased with their result and pointed out that every time they take part in an election their support goes up. 'It would of course not hurt to have got into the European Parliament, but we can be satisfied with the result,' says their main candidate Sten Andersson.

The June List have disappeared from the EU Parliament - and now their offices will be disappearing, bereft of the subsidy income that three parliamentarians had brought in. Main candidate Sören Wibe says that many employees will of course have to leave and that his party must start at square one - but with the benefit of much more experience.
