Swedish Beaches Better than EU Average

Published torsdag 11 juni 2009 kl 14.21

8 Swedish beaches didn't pass EU hygiene standards last year and were awarded red flags according to a report from the European Commission. Almost 500 beaches in the country were tested for bacteria. 97.7% of Swedish beaches passed the tests, compared with the EU average of 96%. The beaches were both sea beaches and beaches round inland lakes.

Håkan Marklund, from the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency says that the water at the beaches is safe for swimming, but that bathers should avoid swallowing too much of it.
