Pension Money in Criticised Gold Mine
Swedish pensioners' savings could be contributing to serious health problems in Guatamala. There's over 30 million US dollars of Swedish pensions money in a Canadian gold mine that has recently been accused of causing major pollution.
Roberto Marani of the Catholic aid organisation COPAE says that the levels of heavy metals in the local water have risen and that the mining has also caused wells to run dry and houses to be destroyed by shock waves from mining explosions.
While the pension funds are still waiting for a report on the mine to be completed, criticism of them is growing, including from the Swedish embassy in Guatamala.
