Same-Sex Marriage

Anglican Church Criticizes Church of Sweden

Published onsdag 15 juli 2009 kl 10.22
Same-sex marriage decision has gotten the Church of Sweden in trouble with its British neighbors.

The Church of Sweden has fallen out of favor with the Anglican Church because of its recent decision to sanction same-sex marriage.

Swedish news agency TT reports that Archbishop Anders Wejryd received a letter from Anglican Church representatives warning him that collaboration between the two churches could diminish as a result.

According to the Church of Sweden's press agent, the letter is a response to an earlier letter sent by the Church of Sweden to its sister churches in the Nordic region, the Baltics, and the British Isles explaining their theological position. The Anglican Church, however, was not convinced; the letter demands a further explanation from the Swedish archbishop regarding same-sex marriage.

In particular, Swedish priests' opportunities to work in another sister church could disappear if action is not taken, the letter says.
