Russian President Dimity Medvedev waves to local residents greeting him during a visit to Tsinkhvali, the main city of the breakaway Georgia's region of South Ossetia

The Swedish EU Presidency has issued a statement on behalf of the European Union concerning Russian President Medvedev's visit to the Georgian region of South Ossetia

The EU notes that the visit to South Ossetia is without the prior consent of the government of Georgia. The EU considers this visit as incompatible with the principle of territorial integrity and is concerned about its effects on the international efforts to stabilise the region.

The statement concludes with the EU reiterating its support for Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
