Bildt Closes Embassy and Consulates

The Swedish Foreign Ministry announced Thursday it is closing several diplomatic missions abroad.
These include the two consulates general in the United States, in New York and Los Angeles, as well as those in Canton, China and the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad, and the Swedish embassy in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
While the Swedish Cultural Center in Paris was spared this time around, more cuts may be coming in the future.
The move comes as the foreign ministry tries to plug its deficit, which had reached 6 and a half million dollars in 2006, and has continued to grow.
The foreign affairs spokesman for the opposition Social Democrats has responded that if his party wins next year’s elections, they will reopen the consulate in New York.
