EU Energy/Environment Meeting in Åre

EU Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs in Åre

The European Union could provide up to 2 and a half billion euros a year to help poor countries protect their tropical forests.

The proposal comes in a report from the European Commission being discussed by EU Environment and Energy ministers Thursday at an informal meeting in Åre in northern Sweden. The talks, during the Swedish presidency of the European Union, are also preparations for the global climate summit in Copenhagen in December.

At the meeting in Åre, Radio Sweden talked to the EU’s Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs.
