Fewer Bicycle Fatalties

Published lördag 25 juli 2009 kl 13.07

Even though more and more urban Swedes are bicycling, the number of deaths or serious injuries to cyclists here has clearly dropped.

At the end of the 90’s there were around 50 bicycle deaths annually in Sweden. According to Swedish Radio News, the number in recent years has dropped to 30.

Thomas Lekander of the Swedish Road Administration says 2009 is looking even better. With more than half the year gone, there have been 9 bicycle fatalities in Sweden so far.

He also points out that half of those on bicycles who die in traffic are over the age of 65, and that it is important to know when it is time to stop, as reflexes and balance diminish.
