School Meal Waste Affecting Climate?

Published fredag 28 augusti 2009 kl 10.58

Up to 30 000 tonnes of food is thrown away by Swedish schools every year according to the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency. This costs local councils up to 85 million US dollars annually, they say.

The agency says that the wastage also costs the environment, with up to 60 000 tonnes of carbon dioxide being emitted annually for no reason. According to Swedish news agency TT the waste occurs both in the production of the school meals, and also through pupils not emptying their plates. The older the pupils are, the more they throw away, they say.

School meals are free for all Swedish pupils under 16.
