Fuglesang into Space with Discovery

Christer Fuglesang prepares to board Discovery

The space shuttle Discovery launched from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida one minute before midnight local time Friday, carrying with it Swedish astronaut Christer Fuglesang.

It was the fourth attempt to get Discovery into space, following problems with the weather and a technical fault.

This is Sweden’s only astronaut’s second journey into space. His first mission, also on Discovery, was in December 2006.

During this new 13 day mission, Fuglesang will be involved in two spacewalks on the International Space Station to remove and replace a materials processing experiment outside the European Space Agency’s Columbus module and return an empty ammonia tank assembly.
