Swine Flu

ECMO Treatment Saves Lives

Published torsdag 3 september 2009 kl 13.52

Many of the news headlines about Swine flu have been about a specialist treatment used on people whose lungs have been incapacitated by the infection. Called ECMO, it involves a machine oxygenating the blood outside of the body, and it is a life-saver, as one young pregnant woman from Scotland found out. Swedish Radio News spoke to her father, who recounted the family's ordeal, which had a happy ending thanks to the ECMO unit at Stockholm's Karolinska Hospital.
