EU Parliament Will Elect Barroso: Buzek
The Swedish EU presidency might not have to deal with one crucial issue – the replacement of the president of the EU Commission. After talks with Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt in Stockholm, the newly elected president of the EU parliament, Jerzy Buzek, told reports he expected the parliament to re-elect the incumbent president of the EU Commission, José Barroso.
Three of the main parliamentary groups had signalized that they were willing to confirm Barroso as head of the commission on September 16th, Buzek added.
Current EU presidency holder Sweden had asked the parliament to re-elect Barroso already in July, but apart from the conservative group, all parties demanded that Barroso outline his agenda for the coming five-year-term.
If the European Parliament was to reject Barroso, the Swedish EU presidency would be hard hit, Sweden’s Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt said earlier.
