Afghan Casualties Pressure Stockholm Meeting

Published fredag 4 september 2009 kl 18.13

Friday’s NATO attack in Afghanistan has overshadowed the informal meeting of the EU foreign ministers in Stockholm. In a first reaction to the deadly air strike – which is believed to have killed dozens of civilians - Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt said all casualties in Afghanistan were regrettable.

But recently, the international security forces had managed to reduce the number of civilians killed, Bildt maintained – adding that up to 8 policemen were killed by the Taliban every day. British Foreign Minister David Milliband demanded that Friday’s deadly air raid be investigated.

Another topic at the informal meeting which will continue Saturday is the Israeli settlements on occupied Palestine territory. EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana called on Israel to halt all building work at Jewish settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories.
