The Russian foreign minister has spoken out for the first time to reject speculation that the Maltese freighter Arctic Sea – hijacked in Swedish waters and disappearing for several weeks – had smuggled field artillery on board.

The ship with its Russian crew was loaded with Finnish timber and was on its way to Algeria when it vanished from the radar screens. The Russian navy caught up with the ship near the Cape Verde islands, arrested the hijackers and is towing the ship back to a Russian port.
