The Swedish Minister for International Development Cooperation, Gunilla Carlsson, has urged Zimbabwe’s president Robert Mugabe to fulfill demands for human rights improvements.  As head of a delegation of the European Union, Carlsson made it clear that the economic sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe would not be lifted before progress in the human rights issue was confirmed. After the talks in Harare the Swedish minister said that Mugabe had denied human rights violations and had not appeared cooperative.
