United Nations secretary general Ban Ki-Moon is hopeful that the Swedish presidency of the EU could lead to a breakthrough in the stalled world climate talks.

He is in Sweden for talks with Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt about the upcoming climate meeting in Copenhagen, and according to news agency TT has a more optimistic view of things than Reinfeldt following last week's meetings in New York, "The EU can play the roll of a motor in all of this", he told journalists.

Reinfeldt is to start a new round of meetings with world leaders over the next few weeks to persuade them to accept even bigger cuts in greenhouse gas emissions.
