Dawit Isaak

Swedish-Eritrean journalist Dawit Isaak is one of three people nominated for the EU parliament’s Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, news wire TT reports. The prize is given each year to people or organizations that fight for democracy and human rights.

Isaak has been incarcerated in Eritrea without trial since 2001, despite efforts from Swedish media organizations, government officials, and the EU parliament to secure his release.

The winner of the prize will be chosen on October 22.
