3 Million People Share Files Illegally

The Pirate Bay's first server.

According to a study done by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry, more than three million Swedes, or one third of the entire Swedish population, download and share files illegally.

The number is quite a bit higher than previous estimates, which may have to do with changes in survey techniques. Earlier, people were surveyed by telephone; the current study used the Internet, however, allowing young people without landline telephones to be included as well.

Kristoffer Schollin, who holds a doctorate in intellectual property law, does not think that the three million number is exaggerated.

“I have about 250 students per year of whom hardly any have not fileshared,” he told news wire TT. “It’s at 100 percent.”
