Battle Lines Drawn
Wednesday's party leader debate gave Swedes a preview of the election conflict to come next year, and hinged on a high-energy war of words between the two main leaders. One commentator from the centre-right Svenska Dagbladet described the Prime Minister as 'psyched and aggressive'.
The governing centre-right coalition under Prime Minister Fredrick Reinfeldt of the Moderate Party will face a red-green alliance headed by Social Democrat Mona Sahlin.
And the positions seem clear - the opposition's main line of assault is that the centre-right's term in office has caused social divides to widen, and has failed to deliver jobs. Meanwhile the government says that a red green government would mean tax rises.
