Rabbits Burned as Fuel in Stockholm

Published fredag 16 oktober 2009 kl 14.40

News reports claim that Swedes are divided over the use of rabbits as fuel for a heating plant in central Sweden.

Thousands of wild rabbits have been shot to protect Stockholm parks and green spaces around highways and elsewhere. The rabbit carcasses are collected, frozen and later burned as fuel.

Some residents think this is a good solution to save energy and plants – and keeps the fast-multiplying rabbits off the roads.

Others, especially animal rights activists, insist this is no way to treat the rabbits - which are survivors or decendants of pets who escaped from captivity or were simply released from caged life.
