Liberals Want State Run Schools

Published tisdag 20 oktober 2009 kl 12.09
Jan Björklund, Liberal Party Leader

The Liberal party wants to bring back the organisation of Sweden’s schools to the state. Currently local authorities are responsible for the schools in their municipalities and regions. But the Liberals are critical to the situation in Swedish schools today and how this differs geographically.

The problem, they write in Swedish daily Dagens Nyheter on Tuesday, is that local authorities vary in their investment into the schools in their area. Swedish legislation stipulates that all children have the same right to a good education. This is not the case today, according to the Liberals, who hope that their party conference will be the beginning of a move back towards a state run school system.

The Swedish schools went from being state run to administered by the local authorities in the beginning of the 1990’s.
