Sweden Frees Plavsic
The Swedish government has announced that former Bosnian-Serb president Biljana Plavsic will be released from prison. A spokesman said in Stockholm that the ministry of justice had consulted the war crimes tribunal in the Hague prior to the decision.
In 2003 the Hague court had found Plavsic guilty of war crimes by authorizing mass killings of Bosnian muslims and Croats during the Balkan war of the Nineties. She was sentenced to eleven years in prison and transferred to a Swedish correctional institution. The 80-year-old has now served two-thirds of her prison term and is by Swedish law eligible to be released on parole. A government spokesman said Plavsic will be allowed to leave prison next Tuesday.
