Israel ‘Surprised’ over Bildt’s Silence

Foreign Minister Carl Bildt

The Israeli government has expressed its surprise over the fact that Sweden’s foreign minister Carl Bildt has not scheduled a visit to the Middle Eastern country during the current Swedish EU presidency. Traditionally, each country that holds the EU presidency sends a high representative to Israel.

Swedish daily newspaper Dagens Nyheter quotes a source inside the Israeli foreign ministry as saying that Bildt’s silence in the matter could be seen as Sweden trying to take up a tough stance on Israel. But according to Bildt’s press secretary Irena Busic the Swedish foreign minister is intending to visit Israel before the end of Sweden’s EU presidency.

Bildt had scheduled talks in Jerusalem in September but those meetings were cancelled amid diplomatic tensions over a Swedish newspaper article claiming that Israeli soldiers would harvest the body organs of Palestinians.
