French Court to Hear Estonia Case
A French court is to take up the issue of responsibility for the 1994 sinking of the Baltic ferry Estonia.
Some 1200 survivors and relatives of the 852 who died in the disaster are suing the international certification agency Bureau Veritas and the Meyer Shipyards, which build the Estonia. Unlike a Swedish court, the French court would be able to order an investigation of the wreck of the ship on the Baltic seabed, as France has not signed the agreement protecting the area.
The hearing is due to begin next week.
