Reactors Closed During Cold Weather
As Sweden, along with much of northern Europe, has been suffering from the coldest winter in decades, several of the country’s nuclear power stations are offline.
Reactors 1 and 2 in Ringhals have been closed since March and May last year. One reactor each at the country’s other two nuclear power stations, Forsmark and Oskarshamn, are running at reduced power, in connection with reconstruction.
The operators say part of the problem is due to new security regulations. The entire Ringhals plant is under special supervision because of major security flaws uncovered there.
Ringhals’ CEO Bertil Dihné admits to Swedish Radio News that it has taken longer than expected to fix the problems. However he says it is possible his reactors may be running again by the beginning of next month.
