The Swedish government is surprised by the announced EU-review of the Nordstream gas-pipeline through the Baltic Sea, Swedish Radio News reports.

It was when the Danish candidate to the EU commission Connie Hedegaard was questioned by the European parliament on Friday, that she said the EU will not give a green light to the pipeline, unless environmental criteria will be fulfilled.

But Swedish government sources tell Swedish Radio News that the EU has got no say in whether the gas pipeline between Vyborg in Russia and Greifswald in Germany will go ahead or not. The government decided to say yes to the pipeline in November last year, and all necessary agreements are already in place and the building can start as far as the Swedes are concerned.
