New Treatments for MS

The American president (played by Martin Sheen) in the TV series "The West Wing" suffered from MS

Swedish researchers and patients have been involved in studies that have found new medicines to fight the debilitating disease multiple sclerosis. The new drugs can be taken as tablets, replacing painful daily injections.

Two of the new medicines have been tested in major international studies in which Swedish patients have been involved. The research is published in the “New England Journal of Medicine”.

Professor Tomas Olsson of Stockholm’s Karolinska Institute, who led the study in Sweden, says there have been treatments for MS for around fifty years, but they have had limited success and many side effects.
