Swedish Finns Fear Language Loss

A new study about the fate of the Swedish language in neighboring Finland shows a dramatic decrease in the number of Swedish-speaking Finns believing that their language will survive – a drop from 87% earlier to only 67%.

Adding to the fears, some hospitals in Finland offering Swedish-speaking maternity services have become Finnish-speaking only.

When Sweden lost its eastern province Finland to Russia 200 years ago, Finland retained both Finnish and Swedish as official languages as is the case even now.
