Less Weddings, More Divorces
For the first time in seven years, the number of weddings has declined in Sweden in 2009. At the same time, more divorces were registered by Swedish authorities, news agency TT reports. According to figures by Statistics Sweden some 20,200 people got divorced in this country last year.
Economics professor Magnus Wikström sees a possible connection between the increasing divorce figures and the financial downturn. People tend to be less willing to maintain their marriages during a recession in Sweden, explained Wikström. But other demographical factors could also have contributed to the divorces in 2009, the economics expert added.
