Swede UN envoy to Afghanistan
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has appointed a Swedish diplomat as the new United Nations special envoy to Afghanistan.
Staffan de Mistura, a career diplomat, who previously served as the UN envoy to Iraq, will replace outgoing envoy, Kai Eide, whose term in office was marred by controversy and conflict with the US government.
The announcement was made at Thursday’s international conference on Afghanistan in London.
De Mistura will take up the post on March 1 and will face the challenging task of supporting efforts to rebuild Afghanistan's civil society.
