A 62-year-old referee tragically died after being hit in the head by an ice hockey puck in a local ice hockey match between two junior teams in Northern Sweden. The incident happened half way through the first period during a game on Saturday.

The referee was hit by the puck on the back of his neck, just under the helmet. He immediately collapsed. Moments later, medically trained people were with him on the ice, giving him first aid, but without success. When the ambulance arrived 40-50 minutes later, the man was already dead.

Police say an autopsy will confirm whether it was the impact of the puck, or the fall on the ice that caused the man's death.

According to the Swedish Ice Hockey Association, this is the first time something like this happens in Sweden.

On Sunday, the teams hope to arrange a debriefing with professionals for the 14-20 year-old boys who played during the game.
