The hunt for three containers full of toxic waste that fell off a cargo ship on Saturday in Swedish waters has been called off. With a number of airplanes searching the area without result, the Swedish Coast Guard has determined that the containers have most likely sunk to the bottom of the sea.

"There's nothing we can do now. The containers have probably sunk to the bottom and can be lying almost anywhere in a pretty large area," Jens Johansson, on-duty Court Guard officer, told news bureau TT.

The three containers fell off the Finnish cargo ship Linda between the Baltic Sea islands of Gotland and Öland in international waters within the Swedish economic zone. One of the containers held five tons of the disinfectant Vantocil, which can damage marine life.

The containers also housed eight tons of an environmentally dangerous substance, and six tons of flammable liquid.
