Bildt Talks Gripen in Brazil
Visiting Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt talked up the advantages of Sweden’s Gripen jet fighter in Brazil Thursday.
The Brazilian government is deciding whether to buy the Gripen or American or French rivals. Brazilian President Lula da Silva has already indicated his preference for the French plane. The contract for the 36 fighters is expected to be worth between four and seven billion dollars.
In a joint news conference with his Brazilian counterpart Thursday, Bildt said the Gripen offers the possibility of a strategic alliance, because Brazilian industry could be involved in its assembly.
