Shoplifting Costing Retailers Millions

Published tisdag 16 februari 2010 kl 11.41

Swedish retailers are losing more than US$800 million per year from shoplifting and theft by employees, according to a new survey.

While employees are responsible for almost US$300 million in stolen products, a similar amount is lost through administrative mistakes and from perishable goods which pass their sell by date.

However the bulk of the losses are from shoplifting despite increasing use of camera surveillance and anti-theft alarms.

“The biggest problem is organized gangs – they’re always one step ahead and it’s hard to keep up with them,” Joakim Ritzén an electrical store manager in Nörrköping in eastern Sweden, told Swedish Radio News.
