SAS Pays Damages to Roma Passengers
The Swedish airline SAS has paid damages of 16,000 dollars to Roma passengers for having insulted and mistreated them. In November 2007, the family was on its way back from Madrid via Stockholm to Skellefteå in northern Sweden.
Due to an overbooking the Roma family alongside other passengers could not board their scheduled plane. While the other passengers were assisted by SAS’ ground staff, the Roma family was deliberately ignored. When they finally got the attention of a SAS employee, the man insulted them in a very rude way and denied the family any assistance whatsoever. The family then had to stay the night at the airport and received help not until the next after.
