Jury System for Sweden?

The Swedish Christian Democrat party, the smallest party in the center-right coalition, wants to introduce a jury system here, such as in the United States.

Swedish district courts currently have panels of professional and lay judges, rather than juries. The lay judges are appointed according to their political party affiliations.

The newspaper “Svenska Dagbladet” says the Christian Democrats want to introduce a system where ordinary citizens are obligated to serve on juries. Party vice chair Maria Larsson tells the newspaper it would be sort of a civilian conscription for the courts.

But unlike the American system, where a juror serves for a single trial, Larsson wants jurors to serve for two years.

There’s no indication how they would be financially compensated.

The proposal is included in the party board’s program which is being presented Thursday before next month’s party conference.
