Strawberry Checks Launched
As Swedes start to prepare for the the short, but vibrant summer, the authorities are taking a special look at one of the season's highlights, Swedish strawberries.
In their determination that only the best berries will make it onto Swedish dessert bowls, inspectors from the Swedish Board of Agriculture are to visit shops, markets and even roadside stalls to make sure the berries are correctly labelled, and that there are no mouldy or rotten berries in the punnets(cartons), according to news agency TT.
The inspectors will also check the origin of the strawberries, even resorting to isotope tests in laboratories to make sure Spanish or Belgian berries aren't being sold as Swedish.
Similar checks last year revealed that one in 10 punnets contained less than perfect strawberries.
