Threatened Judge Slams 'Cover Ups'

A Swedish judge who resigned from a rape trial after one day of proceedings because of threats against her and her family is appealing for more public discussion of the situation facing Swedish judges.

She has criticised the courts for deliberately covering-up threats against judges and prosecutors.

The court first claimed that she resigned due to illness.

The judge spoke out on Wednesday in an opinion article in the daily newspaper, Dagens Nyheter.

The trail of ten men accused of raping a 14-year-old mentally disabled girl continues in the southern city of Malmö with a new judge.

There is a growing number of reports of threats against judges, prosecutors and witnesses, and the smuggling in of weapons into Swedish court rooms. A bomb blast destroyed the door of the home of one Swedish prosecutor involved in legal proceedings against criminal motorcycle gangs.
